Under the Bed Monsters: Author Gaw Ward visits Charlestown Library

On Thursday morning, Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class had the pleasure of visiting the library in Charlestown for a fantastic reading session.

When the children arrived they were greeted by all of the fabulous staff and wonderful author Gaw Ward. It was amazing to listen to Gaw’s stories especially ‘Under the Bed Monsters’ who are actually furry, friendly little beings who take care of children … whilst also getting up to lots of mischief. We all loved hearing the adventures of each of the characters: Gryffin, Hattie, Bidge, Bugly and Poppi!

Once story time had finished, we really enjoyed colouring in some of our favourite characters! What a fantastic morning we all had! Míle Buíochas le gach duine!

Road Safety Workshops

All classes enjoyed workshops on Tuesday from Ruth Kelly (Education Officer) of the Road Safety Authority.

The children were introduced to and informed of all aspects of road safety and the very important role we all play in remaining safe at home and at school.

We discussed the rules of the road, the importance of hi-vis vests, wearing a seatbelt and also a helmet when cycling. We listened to stories and even danced to the ‘Safe Cross Code’!

Our Senior Students this afternoon learned of the importance of being aware of blind spots, concentration and an awareness of all road users.
They heard of frightening statistics that should reman with them long after they leave our school prior to looking at the very important role we each play in emphasising and spreading the message of road safety.

We were delighted to welcome Ruth to our school and feel confident that the children gained much from her visit.

Students of the Week Friday October 18th

We had a very positive assembly earlier where we learned about many nice things that happened throughout the past week in and around our school. We learned how many of our students are setting a great example to others, displaying great leadership skills at a young age.

Teachers spoke of the importance of positivity, catching people doing good things and taking time to compliment others! We learned of students working very hard, sharing, showing patience, always well behaved and in great form! We heard that some students have learned to wait their turn when answering questions and others who in the past loved to talk/chat have become more patient and understanding.

Finally our week ended by hearing of students who are engaging so well with our whole school theme of a ‘Journey to Space’ and of others who throughout the week displayed a very positive attitude to ‘Gaeilge’ and the presentation in their copies and handwriting’ . They have made great progress in recent times setting the bar very high in their classroom. An example for all.

Well done to all the students chosen this week, we’re really proud of the great effort you’ve made. Maith sibh!

Students of the Week Friday October 11th

While this week’s assembly was a little shorter with the visit of the Exploration Dome and GAA Coaching with Eugene we still had time to learn about many nice things that happened throughout the past week in and around our school. We learned how many of our older students are setting a great example to our younger students, showing great maturity inside of and outside class whilst taking part wholeheartedly in all school activities. As always, we heard of students who are making great strides and of those who perform each week consistently well.

We learned of students who consistently work very hard and of those who have learned to wait their turn when answering questions and others who in the past loved to talk/chat have become more patient and understanding. One of our students this week has also displayed a very positive attitude to ‘Gaeilge’ and has made great progress in recent times setting the bar very high in their classroom. Finally, we heard glowing tributes to one of this week students which highlighted that they are always nice to everyone and of an excellent student who has settled into his new school with ease! We cant ask any more than that!

Well done to all the students chosen this week, we’re really proud of the great effort you’ve made. Maith sibh!

Exploration Dome visits St. Attracta’s

As part of our whole school theme ‘A Journey to Space’, we were delighted to welcome Martin and the Exploration Dome to our school.

It was a fantastic interactive learning experience for all our students inside the dome, bringing the Solar System, planets, night sky / constellations to life in a very engaging and child friendly way.

All our classes have been so engaged by our first theme of the school year with young and old learning each day at school! The visit of the Exploration Dome today to our school has certainly supported and added to this learning. We hope all our students enjoyed their day.

Students of the Week Friday October 4th

Today as we gathered in assembly we listened to our teachers speaking very positively of our students, delighted with another outstanding week in school.

Our students of the week were praised for their attention to detail and the effort that they put into their work. Teachers spoke of children who despite distractions going on around them, worked diligently and got their work finished. Sometimes it is easy to get distracted and go off track, so it is a practiced skill to remain focused. We also heard about students who show great kindness to others in their classrooms, in the corridors and on the yard. We are all different and our children are great ambassadors for embracing our differences and getting along. Our teachers also spoke about the honesty of the children which was lovely to hear.

Tp conclude, Mrs. Colson taught us some more signs this week, please and thank you. We will be making a huge effort to use these daily as Gaeilge agus as Bearla. We are working so hard on our whole school theme ‘A Jouney to Space’ at the moment and our displays of work and learning really are out of this world!!

Maith sibh a pháistí!

Students of the Week Friday September 27th

We had another exciting assembly earlier this afternoon reflecting on another very busy week at school! From Music to the Mayo Cross Country finals to exploring our whole school theme of a ‘Journey to Space’ we haven’t had time to draw breath.

As always, it was really difficult for the teachers to make their decision for Students of the Week with so many putting their names forward through their hard work and excellent behaviour.
This week’s students were recommended for a variety of very positive reasons. These ranged from continuously being in great form , working happily each day and having a great impact on classmates, to working very hard with their ‘Gaeilge’ and being kind to others and also to a great improvement in listening to their teacher. Others have settled into their new class with ease and continued where they left off last year while it was also lovely to hear of students who’ve settled so well into their new school. Recommendations also included students making a huge effort to improve handwriting/presentation and setting a great example to younger students by word and action.

Well done to all who were selected – we are very proud of you.
