Students of the Week Friday, February 9th and 23rd

Recent assemblies provided a very positive conclusion to busy school weeks as we celebrated the many achievements, deeds, hard work and effort of our wonderful students.

We learned of the fantastic work over the past weeks in all classes as we explored the theme of Architecture. It has been a learning experience and a joy to visit our rooms and see this at first-hand. Maith sibh!

We were reminded of wonderful projects ongoing in our classrooms and of the preparation for Féile Dramaíochta and Science Blast Project alongside the trojan work of the Amber Flag committees. Well done to all we are very grateful this fantastic work.

Finally, in the past week, we’ve also celebrated ‘Wellbeing Week’. Throughout our school year, we endeavour to promote mental health in the classroom, to teach children about wellbeing and to instil positive attitudes towards their mental health. While wellbeing activities are integrated into the school day throughout the year during wellbeing week we took extra time to highlight the importance of well-being for young and old. Thank you so much to Ms.Durkin, Ms.Breen and to our Amber Flag Committee for all their hard work ensuring it was a great success.

Cumann na mBunscol Sports Quiz – Mayo Finals

Comhghairdeachas to our Sports Quiz team who secured a fantastic second place at the Mayo finals on Wednesday evening in Castlebar. This was a brilliant achievement for our boys. Teams from all over the County were present having qualified from regional events. They put up a fantastic fight, in what was a very difficult test of sporting knowledge across all areas and disciplines. Ten rounds ranging from GAA to Soccer, Athletics, F1, Horse Racing,  American Sports, stadiums, nicknames, fast facts, picture rounds and results gave a possible full score of 100 points…and our team scored a fantastic 90! This showed super knowledge on their behalf!

The boys now progress to the Connacht Finals on Tuesday, March 19th in the McWilliam Park Hotel Claremorris. Maith sibh boys, we are very proud of you all.

Internet Safety Talks 4th/5th and 6th Classes

Our 4th/5th and 6th Classes recently had informative online internet safety talks with Ger Brick of https://www.inetsafetytalk.com/

As part of our Internet Safety Week, Ger spoke to the children about internet safety, cyberbullying, digital footprints, safe searching online/use of apps, social media challenges and privacy settings. These were very informative and engaging workshops. There are so many things to be aware of when interacting online.

Thank you to Ger for his excellent presentations and to all of our students for their participation, ideas and excellent questions! #internetsafety #SaferInternetDay

Cumann na mBunscol Area Sports Quiz

On Wednesday evening last, four senior students represented our school in the Cumann na mBunscol regional Sports Quiz. Congratulations to Freddie, Liam, Tom and Ross who cames second on the evening.

The four boys put up a fantastic fight, in what was a difficult test of Sports knowledge across all areas and disciplines. Ten rounds ranging from GAA to Soccer, Athletics, F1, Horse Racing,  Fast Facts and Results gave a possible full score of 100 points…and the boys scored a fantastic 89! This showed super knowledge on their behalf!

It was wonderful to see competitiveness and sporting interest off “the pitch” and it was also lovely to see many friends from neighbouring schools at the quiz.  We could not be more thankful to our students for their hard work, interest, enthusiasm and superb representation of our school. They make us very proud, as do all of the children in the senior classes who participated in practice and qualifying quizzes this week.

Finally, congratulations to St. Attracta’s NS, Ballaghaderreen who were victorious on the night. Thank you also to Mr.Bracken for all his hard work in the background ensuring young and old had a lovely evening.

We wish the boys well as they progress to the County Final on Wednesday, February 21st in An Sportlann Castlebar.

Students of the Week Friday, January 26th and Friday, February 2nd

Comghairdeachas to our most recent Students of the Week. Our teachers reported very productive engagement and effort in all of the classrooms. Children were commended for showing positivity inside and outside our classrooms and making a huge effort with their written and oral contributions. It was noted that it is never too late in the year to make improvements to work ethic and put your best foot forward.

Our students of the week shone for many reasons, but an overarching theme for all was their positivity in school. Children were described as showing excellent listening skills, patience in class and kindness towards others. These are qualities that we look for in all of our students. Students were applauded for showing enthusiasm for tasks that may be challenging and for reaching their school targets. We are so proud of you all for being the best that you can be. Maith sibh go léir.

Dates for your Diaries:

We look forward to welcoming our new Junior Infants to school on Friday next February 9th. Also, a gentle reminder that we are closed on Thursday and Friday February 15th/16th for our midterm break.

Grandparents’ Day

We celebrated Grandparent’s Day earlier in school. This is always one of the highlights of our school year and an essential part of our Catholic School Week celebrations.

Our day began with Mass in St.James’ Church giving thanks for all our grandparents. The mass was prepared and led by Ms.Henry’s Third class who deserve great credit for their hard work and the manner in which they prepared for and participated in the mass.

After mass, it was lovely to welcome our grandparents to school where they visited our classrooms and chatted with pupils and grandchildren. We heard many stories of what their school days were like, how they travelled to school, First Holy Communion Day, etc. We learned of chores they did on family farms and jobs which they worked as young adults, getting an insight into school and family life in former times.

Grandparents Day allowed us to meet some of our grandparents and think about the importance of all of our grandparents and the gift they are to our lives. For some, it was a return to their alma mater and a time to reminisce.

For all in St.Attracta’s NS, it was a privilege to have the opportunity to acknowledge the enormous contribution grandparents make. We sincerely thank those who took the time to visit and speak to the students and hope that all our grandparents from near and far had a lovely day!

Students of the Week Friday, September 12th & 19th

Comhghairdeachas to our most recent Student of the Week recipients who have made a huge effort in many areas from Gaeilge to handwriting while working on a variety of school initiatives.

Teachers reported students who have tried so hard to improve in all aspects of school life. We learned of children who take great responsibility and pride in their excellent behaviour and display a wonderful attitude in our school. As a result of this effort, teachers told us that it’s always difficult to reach a decision each week as so many children are achievers and in contention.

Another very pleasing aspect of today’s assembly was hearing of children who have made a great effort to be excellent team members in their respective classrooms. Collaboration is so important and these students have worked so hard with others to produce excellent work with their peers. We also learned of wonderful students who arrive at school each day with a lovely happy disposition. This gives us all a lift each morning! Maith sibh go léir. Táimid fíor bhródúil asaibh.
