First Class Coders!

Our First Class students recently completed a six week coding block led by Aideen Murphy and Ms.Sloyan.

They children by learning the language of coding and were excited about becoming programmers each week. ‘Blockly’ followed introducing and forming code by connecting blocks together. This was followed by ‘Angry Birds’ where their mission was to catch the naughty pig, using commands etc.

Finally, their main coding project was Scratch Programming. Scratch is a programming language (CODE) that allowed us to create our own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art. The creativity and skill level was wonderful to see from children, learning how to code for the first time.

We are all so grateful to Aideen for her time and expertise. We were amazed at the children talents and progress in such a short space of time. We look forward to practising coding at home and at school in the future.
Finally thank you also to our Senior students who helped their younger friends with the programme. Next up will be our Second Class students after our Christmas break!

Students of the Week Friday December 15th

As you can imagine this has been a very hectic week preparing for our Christmas Concert. Thankfully we have all put our best foot forward and are working very hard, excited about what lies ahead!

This week the teachers spoke about ‘hard work’, students trying very hard and doing their best. We learned of students who every week could be nominated for this coveted award and of others who are displaying a great improvement in attitude, behaviour and becoming much more confident and independent in all aspects of school life!

We heard of a student who takes great pride in her work, accepts advice in a very positive manner and is ever willing to learn from mistakes and another who has made great strides particularly with their Gaeilge. We also learned of a student who continuously works hard even when something is difficult, always trying to be better and improve. This student is a great example to all others throughout the school. Finally we heard of a student who’s progress continues to surprise and amaze her teacher, what well deserved praise this is!

Well done to all those selected this week and indeed all our students who have worked so well throughout this past week.

So onwards and upwards for our final school week of 2017! All families have by now received arrangements for our Christmas Concert. We are very much looking forward to meeting you all throughout this week!

Have a great weekend!

Students of the Week Friday December 1st

What a busy week we’ve just had getting into the full swing of preparations for our Christmas Concert.

Today at assembly we heard of students who displayed acts of kindness not alone in class but also on yard. These were apparent in all classes not alone in our Senior Classrooms. As always we presented our students of the week and again the praise heard was wonderfully deserved. Children were commended for their efforts in not only helping others with their work, but also with their behaviour. Being a guiding influence on others is a highly rewarding attribute, and our students are portraying this in their school life. We heard the teachers speak of children who are trying so hard with tasks that are difficult for them, but are not giving up and are achieving success in them. What a wonderful life lesson for us all.

Our children today were presented with their awards because of their hard work and dedication to doing the best that they can do at all times. It is a wonderful time to hear all the positives about our children and while only one from each class can get the award, we were reminded that there are children in our classes who could take this award home each week. Well done everyone, we are so proud of all of you. A fantastic effort, Maith Sibh!

Dates for your Diary

Our annual Christmas Concert will take place on Wednesday December 20th at 7 p.m. this year in the CBD Complex. Further details of arrangements for our concert will follow.

Our girls can be so proud of themselves giving was a great team performance with all our panel members contributing and adding. Maith sibh go léir a chailiní.

Many thanks as always to all at Ballaghadereen GAA who deserve great credit for having their excellent facilities available to us. Thank you also to our referee Tommy who officiated today. Finally a very special thank you to Mr Rushe who for all his time, interest and support of the girls.

Jessica Competes in the Connuaght Cross Country Finals in Kiltoom

Comghairdeachas mór to Jessica Casey of our Sixth Class who on Saturday morning competed in the Connuaght Primary Schools Cross Country Finals at St.Brigid’s GAA Club, Kiltoom Co.Roscommon.

Jessica produced a fantastic performance finishing 25th in a very competitive race and can count herself unlucky that she didn’t finish higher due to the crowded nature of the finish.

Jessica has represented our school with great distinction across a number of codes over the past number of years. As a side she is a talented soccer player also and represented her county and indeed her province- Connaught in a recent regional blitz in Dublin.

Well done to Jessica and to all our students who took part in Cross Country this school year. Each and every one of you did your very best and we’re very proud of all your efforts.
