East Mayo Cross Country 23

Comhghairdeachas to the Girls and Boys from our 3rd to 6th Classes, who participated earlier in the East Mayo Cross Country Championships at a very challenging Mellet’s Hill, Swinford.

We had participants in all four events: 3rd and 4th Class Girls & Boys followed by 5th & 6th Class Girls & Boys. We were thrilled with how our young athletes performed.

A number of students finished very strongly Holly Healy, Layla Toolan, Lucy Duffy, Grace Donohue, Luke McDermott, Frank Muldoon, Kalem Higgins, Matthew Naughton, Ted Munnelly, Kyra Higgins and Tom Naughton all secured individual medals alongside one of the performances of the day from Rian O’Connor who was the winner of the Fifth and Sixth Class Boys event after a fantastic run. These Athletes now progress to the County Finals in Belleek, Ballina.

More very pleasing news arrived when the team results were announced and we learned that our four teams had been placed and all now progress to Belleek on Thursday next, September 28th. This was a just reward for many wonderful performances on the day.

Our Third and Fourth Class Girls were Gold medalists in their event. Team members Holly Healy, Layla Toolan, Lucy Duffy, Grace Donohue, Katie McMeel, Cara McNicholl and Eva Kelly all finished strongly following Holly’s lead. Our Junior Boys had a fantastic performance winning their team event with all six runners finishing in the top twenty. Luke McDermott, Frank Muldoon, Kalem Higgins, Matthew Naughton Ted Munnelly and Ollie Doherty all had super performances.

5th and 6th Class- Senior Boys secured a Bronze Medal in their team event to join those who qualified as individuals. Here again, we had excellent runs from Rian and Tom as mentioned, Alex Pugaciov, Robert Tiernan, Ross Duffy and Mick Bomser.

Our day ended with the wonderful news that our Fifth and Sixth Class – Senior Girls team were the second in their team event, Comhghairdeachas to the aforementioned Kyra who was supported by terrific runs from Olivia Gately, Kayla Honeyman, Kelligh Meehan, Jenna Eve Casey and Aoibhe Gibson Again, this was wonderful news as all the students worked very hard, battling right to the finish line, and can be extremely proud of their efforts.

A final word of thanks to all the boys and girls who have given so much in preparation for this event. It was amazing to see the children progress at all levels and show great determination and eagerness to represent their school. Thank you to all our students who have come out at school for Cross Country. It was great to see your enthusiasm. Long may it last!

To finish a very special word of thanks to all the members of Swinford AC who organised this event and to our wonderful Mums and Dads for their great support. It was a most enjoyable morning.
